Determining individual phase response curves from aggregate population data.

چکیده
Phase reduction is an invaluable technique for investigating the dynamics of nonlinear limit cycle oscillators. Central to the implementation of phase reduction is the ability to calculate phase response curves (PRCs), which describe an oscillator's response to an external perturbation. Current experimental techniques for inferring PRCs require data from individual oscillators, which can be impractical to obtain when the oscillator is part of a much larger population. Here we present a simple methodology to calculate PRCs of individual oscillators using an aggregate signal from a large homogeneous population. This methodology is shown to be accurate in the presence of interoscillator coupling and noise and can also provide a good estimate of an average PRC of a heterogeneous population. We also find that standard experimental techniques for PRC measurement can produce misleading results when applied to aggregate population data.

Voltage unbalance negatively affects both distribution network operators (DNOs) and customers by introducing overheating, accelerated thermal ageing of equipments, reduced efficiency and therefore additional financial cost. Once a new source of unbalance appears in the network, the overall degree of unbalance of the network will be increased, contributing to the system losses additionally. The ...

BACKGROUND In aggregate studies, ecological indices are used to study the influence of socioeconomic status on health. Their main limitation is ecological bias. This study assesses the misclassification of individual socioeconomic status in seven ecological indices. METHODS Individual socioeconomic data for a random sample of 10,000 persons came from periodic health examinations conducted in ...
متن کاملThe Cross-Sectional Distribution of Price Stickiness Implied by Aggregate Data
Using only aggregate data as observables, we estimate multisector sticky-price models for twelve countries, allowing the degree of price stickiness to vary across sectors. We use a specification that allows us to extract information about the underlying cross-sectional distribution from aggregate data. Identification is possible because sectors play different roles in determining the response o...
متن کاملIndividual versus Aggregate Income Elasticities for Heterogeneous Populations
The paper deals with different concepts of income elasticities of demand for a heterogenous population and the relationship between individual and aggregate elasticities is analyzed. In general, the aggregate elasticity is not equal to the mean of individual elasticities. The difference depends on the heterogeneity of the population and is quantified by a covariance term. Sign and magnitude of ...
